KOWLLON PARALLEL PARK CITY

Kowloon-Walled Parallel Park City

When chaotic meets systematic

Kowloon Walled city was once the most famous “ghetto” in Hong Kong. The site is currently a public park. My goal is to recreate Kowloon Walled City and to keep the site working as a park at the same time.

The range of things that once found inside was surprisingly wide, from hair salon to drug dealers, and from residence to gang-bang headquarters. However, people loved living inside because they set their own rules, they created their own government, they were self-sustained, and they were 100% independent from the Hong Kong Government. I picked this as my monument not just because I grew up in Hong Kong, but also I appreciate the chaos and the randomness of the Kowloon Walled City.

To try to recreate the once ruleless community is impossible but perhaps it is possible to bring back the spirit of Kowloon Walled City. I will be recreating the framework of Kowloon Walled City based on my interpretation, and then I will insert A "dragon park" inside the frame. In order to retain the character of Kowloon walled city, a façade similar to the original is essentially the starting point or face of the of the vine/dragon/park. The exterior is stricter/flatter more conformist, but it becomes looser as it enters the core of the city. Inside the vine, there will be diversified programs such as residence, malls, schools or restaurants. On top of them, there will be green park, where it is not necessarily linked to what’s happening in the bottom. To conclude. I am creating the Kowloon Walled City version 2.0, a refined version of the previous.
